5. How do we know God is True?
I think the question means how do we know God is real, and that what the Bible says about him is true?
As only the Bible claims to be a message from this God we must use it to answer the question.
The Bible says that faith is needed. Let me read Hebrews 11:1 and 6. “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen….. And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.”
This means we cannot prove that God is real, it demands faith.
BUT this faith is not blind faith because God invites us to test his claims.
First by observation of the heavens and all the natural world around us. So Romans 1:19-20 says “For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.”
Second by comparing his abilities with men’s about the future. This is because we know the present, we have some imperfect knowledge of the past, and know nothing about the future.
God says he was, is and will be, the almighty. He challenges mankind (that’s you and me) to foretell the future, to show that we are like God. God can and does know the future because He is in control. He invites us to admit that we do not know the future at all, then test his knowledge of the future by reading the Bible and checking it out.
Such claims and comments are in the prophecy of Isaiah for instance. So in 41:21-23 just as an example – “Set forth your case, says the Lord; bring your proofs, says the King of Jacob. Let them bring them, and tell us what is to happen. Tell us the former things, what they are, that we may consider them, that we may know their outcome; or declare to us the things to come. Tell us what is to come hereafter, that we may know that you are gods; do good, or do harm, that we may be dismayed and terrified.”
God then proves his claims by Old Testament references to things that had not yet happened. There are lots of examples but here is the best and most amazing of all, what happened to his people the Jews. (another? **)
Just look at Jeremiah 30:3, Luke 21:24, and history!
First Jeremiah 30:3 – “For behold, days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will restore the fortunes of my people, Israel and Judah, says the Lord, and I will bring them back to the land that I gave to their fathers, and they shall take possession of it.” This was written 2,600 years ago! It’s still happening!
And then Luke 21:24 – “They will fall by the edge of the sword and be led captive among all nations, and Jerusalem will be trampled underfoot by the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.” This has never happened to any other nation ever. This was written 2,000 years ago! It happened in 1967!
I repeat – Human beings cannot tell the future but in this example the Bible does. SO – God is real and what we read about him in the Bible is true.
But you still need faith to turn to him and become a Christian. God wants your heart as well as your head.
